Abstract :

The usage of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in agriculture is expanding and the farmers are slowly adopting to new ICT tools. To assess the extent of adoption among the farmers the study was carried out in Kestur village, Tumakuru District, Karnataka. For the purpose, a questionnaire was designed based on the literature review and experts interviews. Initially, a pilot study was conducted and based on the analysis, the questionnaire was reviewed and updated. The data was collected from 160 peasants and analysed using IBM-SPSS 25.0. The analysis found that most of the farmers are using smartphone. Furthermore, the analysis showed that the computer knowledge and Internet usage knowledge among farmers is independent of their educational level. The cluster analysis resulted in two categories of farmers. The first categories of farmers are proactive and they are capable of adopting to ICT tools. The second category of farmers need training and support so that they can adopt to new technological changes. Thus, farmers can be easily trained and therefore there is a vast scope for developing mobile apps for agriculture applications.
